Controls Engineer

Our client is a pioneering engineering firm at the forefront of renewable energy and advanced power systems. Operating primarily in Southern California, the company delivers comprehensive design, integration, and support services for microgrids, fuel cells, CHP systems, and other distributed energy technologies.
As part of their growth strategy, they are seeking a technically adept Electrical Engineer with hands-on experience in system integration, controls, and energy analytics. What YOU get to DO at this growing company:

Design, develop, and integrate electrical systems for renewable and distributed energy technologies such as Solar PV, Fuel Cells, Batteries, CHP, and Diesel/Gas Generators.

Utilize AutoCAD to create, revise, and interpret electrical schematics, panel wiring diagrams, and microgrid control layouts.

Configure and program microgrid controllers (e.g., Agave® Evolution™, Siemens ET200SP, SMA Sunny Island/Data Manager), and manage I/O mapping, relay outputs, and load control strategies.

Set up networked communications for control systems including VPN tunnels, Modbus, RS-485, Ethernet/IP, and LTE-based diagnostics.

Support energy analytics and dashboard deployment with platforms like Agave® Systems; interpret submeter data (electric, thermal, gas), and manage GHG and utility cost modeling.

Participate in fieldwork including commissioning support, hardware installation, wire sizing, voltage mapping, and communication setup.

Collaborate on documentation such as as-built drawings, asset tracking, maintenance logs, and incentive or tax reporting.
What you NEED to SUCCEED in this challenging role:

Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.

1–5 years of hands-on experience in engineering roles involving electrical integration and energy systems.

Proficiency in AutoCAD and control systems design; experience with PLC programming and digital/analog I/O.

Familiarity with communication protocols and remote diagnostics (DHCP, IPsec VPN, TCP/IP).

Strong knowledge of microgrid systems, energy monitoring tools, and control hardware.

Strong analytical skills and ability to troubleshoot in industrial environments.

Excellent communication and documentation skills; comfortable working with diverse stakeholders.

Must reside in Southern California with the flexibility to travel for site support.
Preferred (but not required):

UL 508A familiarity, OSHA 10/30 certification.

Experience with SCADA, HMI platforms, or BI tools for energy visualization.

Siemens or PLC-specific certifications; familiarity with NFPA 70E standards.
